Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

OZEV-APPROVED ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) CHARGING POINT INSTALLER

What is the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)?

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a UK government initiative that allows businesses, charities, and public sector organisations to claim money off the purchase and installation of EV charging points. The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OZEV) will contribute £350 for each charging point (up to a maximum of 40) for organisations in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Is my business eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme Grant?

Businesses are eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme Grant if they are a registered business, charity, or public sector organisation based in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. Businesses must have dedicated off-street parking and have a current or future need for electric vehicle charging points.

Do you work from home? If your place of work is also your home, you can apply for the grant under this scheme as long as your address is listed as your place of business with Companies House or HMRC.

How do I apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme?

Applicants must first discuss their needs with an authorised Workplace Charging Scheme installer, who will conduct a site survey to assess the feasibility of installing charging points. The applicant then applies for the Workplace Charging Scheme grant using the online application form. A unique identification grant voucher code will be issued that the applicant can then share with any OZEV-authorised Workplace Charging Scheme installer, who will then claim the £350 grant on their behalf.

Can I combine the Workplace Charging Scheme with other government grants?

We recommend the EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets, which allows eligible businesses to claim £350.00 per charging point installed plus a further £500.00 per EV-ready parking space. More information can be found here.

How can I have Elecology install an EV charging point at my workplace?

  • Arrange a site survey so that we can advise you on the best EV charging solution and check your eligibility for the Workplace Charging Scheme.

  • Apply online for a Workplace Charging Scheme voucher.

  • If your application is successful, you should receive a voucher code by email in five working days, which you can then give to Elecology as your chosen installer. This voucher will be valid for 180 days. The email will also provide the following information:

    • Your contact details

    • The installation site(s)

    • The number of sockets and sites the voucher is valid for

    • The voucher’s expiry date

  • As a Workplace Charging Scheme-approved EV charging point installer, Elecology will then complete the installation and claim the grant on your behalf. Barring extraordinary circumstances outside of our control, we will always finish work within 180 days of your voucher’s date of issue.

What do I do if my application is unsuccessful?

Although we have never had an unsuccessful application, applicants may appeal unsuccessful applications by emailing the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) at workplacechargingscheme@dvla.gov.uk. A DVLA manager will review your case and issue a decision. The outcome of this appeal is final and cannot be re-appealed.

What do I do if my installation can’t be completed within 180 days?

WCS vouchers are non-transferable.  If for any reason your installation can’t be completed by the time your voucher expires, email workplacechargingscheme@dvla.gov.uk to withdraw your application. Afterwards, you can then apply for a new voucher.

In cases where some, but not all, chargepoints on your voucher have been completed by the expiry date, Elecology will have to claim the grant for the completed installations. After that, you can apply for a new voucher to cover the remaining installations. Installations accomplished before the issuance of the new voucher are not eligible in such instances.

Can I install subsequent chargepoints after claiming the grant the first time?

As long as your cumulative total of chargepoints under the grant doesn’t exceed 40 sockets, you can apply for new vouchers for additional chargepoints and sites after your first time. To illustrate, if you claimed 15 chargepoint sockets initially, then you remain eligible for 25 more.

I have further questions about my application.

If you have any additional questions or concerns about the WCS or your application that have not been covered in this guide, you can do one of the following:
