EV Chargepoint & Infrastructure Grants Available for Installers

As a way of encouraging the wider adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), the government has introduced several grant schemes to reduce the cost of installing chargepoints and their associated infrastructure in the UK. These programmes are designed to support residential as well as  commercial property owners and occupants alike by covering a portion of the cost of purchasing EV chargers. This includes hiring the services of an OZEV-approved EV charge point installer like Elecology.

If you’re planning to install a charging station for your personal or business use, you might be qualified to apply for the following grants:

Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant for Renters and Flat Owners

Designed for domestic properties, this grant offers renters and flat owners a substantial financial incentive to install EV charge points. Its beneficiaries can get 75% off the cost of purchasing and installing a chargepoint, up to a maximum of £350. This grant helps make EV ownership more accessible for individuals who may not own a house with a driveway but still want to contribute to the UK’s shift toward greener transport.

To be eligible, applicants must either own and live in a flat or rent any residential property. This includes individuals under shared ownership schemes. Additionally, they must own, lease, or be the primary user of an eligible electric vehicle. The grant also requires that applicants have access to off-street parking. This prerequisite ensures that the chargepoint can be installed in a private space where the vehicle can be conveniently charged.

The programme benefits qualified renters and flat owners by reducing the financial burden of installing a chargepoint. At the same time, it provides an added incentive for landlords to upgrade their properties. It can also make flats and rental properties more attractive to prospective tenants who own electric vehicles.

Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant for Households with On-Street Parking

Aimed at people who rely on on-street parking, this grant reduces the cost of installing EV chargepoints alongside a cross-pavement charging solution, such as a cable channel. Just like the one for renters and flat owners, this grant covers 75% of the cost of purchasing and installing a chargepoint up to £350. With the UK’s growing urban population and the limited availability of off-street parking, this grant encourages the installation of chargepoints in city environments, helping to make electric vehicles a viable option for those living in flats or terraced houses with on-street parking.

Applicants who want to benefit from this grant must own or rent a residential property and have permission from their local planning and highways authority to install the chargepoint and cross-pavement solution. The solution must be permanent, excluding temporary measures like cable mats.

Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets

There are also EV chargepoint grants that are aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. This grant, in particular, offers financial support for the installation of EV chargepoints and the necessary infrastructure for staff and fleet vehicles. With a focus on helping businesses transition to electric fleets, it shoulders 75% of the cost of the installation and wider infrastructure work, up to a maximum of £15,000.

Businesses with up to 249 employees are qualified for this grant. At the same time, the company must be registered at Companies House or VAT-registered with HMRC, and it should have off-street parking for staff or fleet vehicles. The grant covers both the installation of chargepoint sockets and the infrastructure required for future installations, such as wiring and posts. This flexibility allows businesses to plan for future growth, ensuring they have the capacity to support a larger EV fleet in the future.

By providing financial assistance for businesses to adopt EVs, this grant helps reduce the environmental impact of commercial operations while also promoting sustainability in the workplace. It also benefits businesses by reducing long-term running costs, as electric vehicles are cheaper to operate than petrol or diesel cars.

Electric Vehicle Chargepoint and Infrastructure Grants for Landlords

Landlords who wish to install EV chargepoints and supporting infrastructure in rental or leasehold properties can benefit from two different grants. The EV chargepoint grant shoulders 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint socket, up to £350 per socket. Landlords can apply for up to 200 grants each year for residential properties and up to 100 for commercial properties. The use of these grants provides a way to future-proof properties and attract eco-conscious tenants.

The second option is the EV infrastructure grant, which covers the cost of wider building work required to install multiple chargepoint sockets. This grant offers 75% off the cost of infrastructure work, up to £30,000, including items like wiring and posts that ensure that the property is ready to accommodate multiple EV chargepoints now and in the future.

Workplace Charging Scheme

The Workplace Charging Scheme is available to businesses, charities, and public sector organisations. It provides support for the installation of up to 40 chargepoint sockets across multiple sites. The grant covers 75% of the cost of purchasing and installing EV chargepoints, up to £350 per socket, making it a cost-effective solution for organisations looking to support EV adoption among employees.

This scheme benefits workplaces by allowing them to offer convenient charging facilities to their employees and fleet vehicles. For businesses with employees who own electric vehicles or companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint by switching to electric fleets, this grant makes it more affordable to install any necessary infrastructure. Additionally, providing EV charging stations at work can be seen as an employee perk, which contributes to staff satisfaction and retention.

Businesses that have their primary place of work in a residential property can also apply for the grant if their home is registered with Companies House or listed on a business rate bill. This makes the scheme flexible and accessible, even for small businesses or individuals working from home.

The range of grants available in the UK for EV chargepoint and infrastructure installation demonstrates the government’s commitment in supporting the transition to electric vehicles. These grants provide individuals, landlords, businesses, and local authorities with the financial support needed to make EV charging more accessible. As more people adopt electric vehicles, having the infrastructure in place will become increasingly important. By taking advantage of these grants, individuals and businesses can contribute to a greener future while enjoying the practical benefits of reduced installation costs.
