EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV)’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure grant for staff and fleets is designed to help small to medium-sized businesses in the UK cover the upfront cost of installing EV charging points and supporting infrastructure for their staff and fleet vehicles. It is open for applications until the end of March 2025. If you’re planning to install or upgrade EV chargers for your business, this grant presents you with the opportunity to complete this project at a reduced cost.

What Does the Grant Cover?

The infrastructure grant for staff and fleets has a maximum amount of £15,000 and can be used to subsidise up to 75% of the cost of installing  EV charging points. Aside from covering the cost of multiple EV charging points, the grant can be used to fund the installation of the wider supporting structures, such as posts and cables, that are needed to ensure the full functionality of the sockets. Here’s a summary of what the grant offers:

  • You can get £350 for each installed charging socket.

  • You can get £500 for each EV ready parking space that is created. EV ready means that the distribution equipment is in place ready for the chargers to be added at a later date.

  • You can apply for up to 5 grants to cover the cost of improving 5 different sites.

Does Your Business Qualify for This Grant?

To be eligible for the grant, your business needs to meet the following qualifications:

  • The small to medium-sized business has fewer than  249  employees.

  • The business is either registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC.

  • The property where the EV chargers will be installed is in the UK.

  • The business owns the property or has the right to use it.

  • The chargers will only be used by the building’s staff and vehicles.

  • The work involves the installation of at least 1 charging point socket.

  • The work involves  creating at least 5 EV ready parking spaces.

  • The parking space is off-street, private, and clearly defined.

  • The EV charging point installer is OZEV-approved.

  • The EV charger model is approved by OZEV as well.

What Exclusions and Limitations Should You Be Aware Of?

Do take note that this grant comes with a few exclusions and limitations. For one, you cannot receive this grant if the EV charging point installation is a mandatory requirement, such as part of the planning application condition or where the Part S Regulations apply. Grant beneficiaries are also only allowed to receive up to £315,000 in minimal financial assistance (MFA) in the last 3 financial years. This time frame includes the current year and 2 years preceding it, and MFA includes state grants, subsidies, and any other financial incentives funded by the government. If you’re applying for this EV infrastructure grant, make sure that you do not exceed this limit.

Also, as the owner or manager of the business that will benefit from this grant, you’re responsible for assessing the site for potential fire risks, addressing the said risks, and maintaining appropriate fire safety measures for the EV charging point installation site.

How Can Your Business Apply for This Grant?

The first step is to speak with an OZEV approved charging point installer who can talk you through the installation process. The approved installer will survey the property and identify the best installation plan for the charging points and explain any limitations.

Once the proposal is approved,  you need to create an account on the OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grants portal and apply for the grant. After this, your EV charging point installer can complete the claim for you.

How Is the Grant Claimed?

Once they’ve completed the work, the EV charging point installer will claim the grant on behalf of your business. They will provide OZEV with the details of the completed project, including pictures of the site and the invoice. OZEV will inform you about the submission so you can review the claim. You have a week to respond, otherwise the claim will be submitted to OZEV as it is. Upon approval, the grant will be paid to the installer, who will then deduct it from your invoice.
