Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant
Can I still claim the Electric Vehicle Homecharging Scheme (EVHS) grant?
As of April 2022 the Electric Vehicle Homecharging Scheme (EVHS) grant is no longer available to homeowners. The scheme is replaced by the EV Chargepoint Grant, which is available for flat owner-occupiers and people living in rented properties.
What is the EV Chargepoint Grant and what does it cover?
The EV Chargepoint Grant is a government initiative designed to help homeowners and people living in flats that are looking to install electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints at home. The grant offers financial assistance to cover part of the costs associated with purchasing and installing an EV chargepoint, helping make home charging more affordable. The grant typically covers up to 75% of the total cost, capped at £350 including VAT.
Who can apply for an EV Chargepoint Grant?
Tenants in rented properties and flats owners are eligible to apply for the EV Chargepoint Grant, provided they meet the necessary requirements. The scheme is particularly aimed at those who own or lease an electric vehicle or have an EV on order.
In summary, to benefit from this grant, individuals must meet these basic requirements:
Be flat owners or people who live in rented flats
You rent a residential property
Have dedicated off-street parking on the property
Be the primary owner or lessee of a qualified EV
What other requirements do you have to qualify for the EV Chargepoint Grant?
To qualify for the EV Chargepoint Grant, you must own, lease, or have ordered an eligible electric vehicle. The chargepoint and installer must be approved by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) as well. Additionally, applicants must not have previously claimed the grant for the same property and vehicle.
As part of the application process, you can be asked to show proof of the following:
You have purchased an eligible vehicle
You’ve leased an eligible vehicle for at least 6 months
You’ve been given an eligible company vehicle for a minimum of 6 months
Your employer has listed you as the primary user of an eligible vehicle for at least 6 months
How do you start the process of applying for the EV Chargepoint Grant?
Applying for the EV Chargepoint Grant is a straightforward process. Once you have an eligible EV and an approved installer, the installer will apply for the grant on your behalf. They will deduct the grant amount from your final invoice, and you’ll be responsible for the remaining cost. The installer will handle all the paperwork and submit the application to OZEV, ensuring the grant is properly claimed.

Can you benefit from an EV chargepoint grant if you have a business registered at your home address?
Yes, you can still qualify for the EV Chargepoint Grant if you have a business registered at your home address. However, if you primarily work from a residential property that also serves as your home, you may be eligible to apply for Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS). To qualify, your address must either be listed as your business address with Companies House or be recorded on your business rates (non-domestic rates) bill issued by your local council or Land & Property Services (LPS).
What other EV chargepoint grants are there?
In addition to the EV Chargepoint Grant for homeowners and people living in flats, several other schemes are available to meet different needs. The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is ideal for businesses, charities, and public sector organisations looking to install chargepoints for their employees or fleet vehicles. This grant covers up to 75% of the installation costs, capped at £350 per socket for up to 40 sockets across multiple sites.
The EV Infrastructure Grant is for Small to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This grant helps small businesses cover the cost of installing EV chargepoints and any associated infrastructure improvements. It offers up to £15,000 per site, depending on the complexity of the installation. Finally, local councils may also offer grants or incentives, so it’s worth checking with your local authority for region-specific support.
These grants ensure that different types of EV users can access charging infrastructure, whether they are renters, homeowners, businesses, or small enterprises.
